thought i'd do a thread of the method i use for taking cuttings
equiptment you'll need:
1" rockwool cubes-soak well, same temp water as in jug
sharp blade (either stanley blade, or craft scalpel)
water jug, with slightly warm water-just enough to take the chill off the water
scissors
light source (i use an 18w fish tank flouro, you could use 2X 11w energy saver bulbs)
make sure everything is very clean
first cut your stems from the doner plant using sharp scissors (a sharp cut will heal quicker on the doner), and place the cut end directly into water
remove growth as shown in picture, if possible choose a stem with 2 nodes close together (as in pic), and remove both shoots, using the sharp blade. you want to cut as slose as possible to the stem as possible, without cutting into the main stem
once nodes are removed make a 45 degree cut around 10-15mm below the bottom node-ideally you want to end up with one node just above the surface of the cube and one node below the surface
if the stem is quite "woody" you can carefully scratch the surface of the stem with the flat of the blade to encorage rooting, but as long as you select your branch well this shouldn't be necessary
that's the 3 pics, i'll carry on in next post, then the pics go with the text

After removing nodes, where to make bottom cut
once you make the bottom cut you can now dip the end in clonex (or rooting powder)
i don't use clonex, so i dip back in the water (to prevent air bubbles getting into stem)
now push gently but firmly into the rockwool cube, being careful not to squeeze the stem too much (it might be necessary to push a match or similar into the cube to make a pilot hole)
once in the cube trim away any large leaves (being careful not to damage the growing node-2mm from stem is good), and trim any fan leaves to reduce the amount of water loss through the leaves
now place them under 24 hours of light in a humid environment, and mist them daily with fresh water
if the rockwool has dried out dip the bottom 5mm of the cube in some water, this will encourage the roots to "look" for the water and develop more strongly
basically you're trying to just keep them alive-you don't want the leaves to start growing, you want all the plants energy to go into developing the roots
once you have healthy roots coming from the cube it's time to plant them into your chosen medium, and start feeding them lightly
think that's it, hope it's clear enough, any questions please don't hesitate to ask
i'm not saying it's the greatest (or only)way of doing them, but it's always worked well for me, usually get 90%+ sucess rate with this method
