American judoka thrown out of Games for testing positive for cannabis
The 23-year-old, who finished seventh in the -73kg class after losing a repechage bout against Mongolia's Nyam-Ochir Sainjargal, tested positive for cannabis.
'I had favorable grips and didn't use them enough' said Del Popolo after his elimination from his first Olympic competition.
'You wish you could get it back, but . . . it's a good lesson learned. You can't just sit around and wait, you have to make it happen. Especially in top level sports.'
Delpopolo was born in Belgrade and spent the first 21 months of his life in a Montenegran orphanage before being adopted by an American family.
When asked what judo meant to him, he said 'it's my whole life. I date a girl who's a five-time national champion in judo, my sister does judo, my parents are educated in judo.
'Judo's my life, and I'm going to go until my body can't go anymore.'
