Legal status of marijuana around the world
In 1961, during the 'Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs', the United Nations placed cannabis on the list of banned (narcotic) drugs. In a very short time, virtually all governments worldwide implemented a national amendment to ban cannabis in their country.
Fortunately, times are changing. Cannabis is on a Legalize Tour and it seems this tour will not stop any time soon. Many countries have legalized medical cannabis the last decade. The ban has also been broken for recreational use. Several states in the US and a few countries have legalized cannabis for recreational use also or are about to do so.
Below you will find an overview of all countries that are members of the United Nations and the legal status of medical cannabis and cannabis for recreational use in that country.
