Cannabis tea is a great way to enjoy the effects of cannabis whilst experiencing the refreshing and comforting elements that a good old cup of tea has to offer. Drinking cannabis tea provides a similar high to edibles in that the effects come on slower and generally last longer. This is because the body uses a different metabolic pathway to process cannabinoids that are eaten and drank in comparison to those that are ignited and inhaled.
WHAT YOU NEED
Making cannabis tea is a rather simple process, but there are a few tips and techniques that must be employed along the way to ensure that the tea becomes psychoactive and is a success. Before beginning the brewing process you will need the following items and ingredients. This recipe can be scaled up and down to either produce more pronounced effects or to provide enough for several people.
- 1 gram of ground or whole cannabis. The strain of choice is quite important here. If you are looking to prepare a brew to blow minds and catalyse a power high then opt for a high THC strain with the relevant terpenes that will provide the effects you are looking for. If you are looking for more of a medical effect then opt for strains with a higher percentage of CBD that might offer relief from pain and inflammation.
- 1 litre of boiling water.
- 1 teaspoon of coffee creamer or another fat source that is compatible with a cup of tea.
- A saucepan with a lid.
- A sieve or tea ball to strain the cannabis flowers.
- A storage container to keep the tea fresh for however long you plan on keeping it.
To begin with you will need to bring the water to a boil. If you are using whole flower buds then this can be added straight into the water. If you are using ground cannabis then you can either add this straight into the water and sieve it out, or place it into a tea ball or strainer first.
Let the tea simmer for around 15 to 20 minutes. This step, although easy, is probably the most important process of the entire recipe, without doing this the tea would not become psychoactive and offer a high. Cannabis needs to be heated in order to become psychoactive in a process known as decarboxylation, a process that converts non psychoactive THCA in psychoactive THC by removing a carboxyl group. When it comes to smoking this process occurs almost automatically. However, when it comes to cannabis tea and edible recipes, heating is required as a part of the cooking process to ensure that decarboxylation takes place.
Once the brew has been adequately simmered and made psychoactive, it’s time to make it consumable. Remove all of the plant matter from the tea and pour it into a storage container such as a large glass jar. Now place your chosen fat source into the mixture. This step is also critical to ensuring the psychoactive nature of the tea. Cannabinoids such as THC are fat soluble, so this step ensures that the cannabinoids will be adequately absorbed into your system upon drinking. It will also help to maintain the integrity and potency of the brew.
STORAGE AND CONSUMPTION
The tea can be stored in the fridge for around 5 days, though this will also depend of the expiry date of the fat source that you have chosen to use in the recipe.
When taken out of the fridge the tea can be reheated before consumption, this is where you can start to get creative. Feel free to add honey, maple syrup, or another type of sweetener to enhance the taste. You could even take this opportunity to blend in order herbs that have medicinal effects that you think would go well with the blend. A dash of mint or green tea might be a good choice.
