Because marijuana consists of different components, the temperature you use to heat your bud is very important. THC for instance is released at a different temperature then CBD or THCV. So what is the ideal temperature when using a vaporizer?
Back in the days you would smoke your weed in a joint or a homemade bong. But the last decade seems to be all about vaping. Vaping has become trendy and there are new vaporizers appearing on the market each day.
So why vape and not roll a joint or use a bong?
Vaporizing is a much healthier way to consume cannabis because it heats up the cannabinoids to evaporate without any combustion. This way the vapor from a vaporizer doesn’t contain any harmful toxins such as carbon monoxide and tar.
With a vaporizer cannabinoids will simply evaporate, creating a vapour rather than smoke. Some say this is richer in flavor complexity, and some studies even reveal vape to be higher concentrated in cannabinoids.
Another good reason to vape and not smoke is that research has shown that vaping is about 30% more efficient. This means that you need way less cannabis to get to you desired effect and this of course saves a lot of money.
THE PERFECT TEMPERATURES FOR VAPING CANNABIS
Setting the right temperature for your vaporizer depends on the effect or purpose you are looking for. The optimal/usual range lies between 180-210°C/356-410°F. In general terms, the more euphoric, energetic high comes at lower temperatures below 190°C/374°F and then the more relaxing meditative highs come in at temperatures above it.
There are many different types of cannabinoids, and each will evaporate at different temperatures. You definitely can (and should) play around with the settings on your vape to find the different flavors and different quality highs – with the same batch of weed!
In a broad sense, you’ll be zooming into specific “areas” of the cannabinoid profile of your weed.
As you increase temperature, the mixture of compounds increases exponentially. In most cases, you’ll want to make the most of your stash, so start low and work your way up. Give it some time for the high to kick in and try to focus on what it feels like. Register what temperature YOU like best, and at what time of the day. There is nothing written down that says you can’t smoke a bowl or two at 160°C/320°F in the morning and then take the weed, save it, and then have another good couple of hits at 220°C/428°F later on in the day.
So in terms of cannabinoids, what temperatures release what compounds? What effects do these compounds have on the mind and body?
Temperature Range – 160-185°C/320-365°F
- THC – 157°C/314°F
- CBG – 52°C/125°F
- Pinene – 155°C/311°F
- CBD – 160-180°C/320-356°F
- Delta-8 THC – 175-185°C/347-365°F
- Beta-Caryophyllene – 160°C/320°F
- Alpha-Terpinol – 156°C/313°F
- Beta-Myrcene – 166–168°C/331-334°F
- Delta-3-Carene – 168°C/334°F
- 1,8-Cineole – 176°C/349°F
- D-Limonene – 177°C/351°F
- P-Cymene – 177°C/351°F
The lowest setting you should have on your vaporizer should really be 160°C/320°F. This is because THC starts vaporizing at 157°C/314°F, so this should be your lowest end of the scale. This will present you with a mellow, easy high. More of a head high than a body stone. All in all, it is the famous THC we all know and love, which gives us that lovely buzz.
CBG vaporizes at 52°C/125°F, so that will be in there too. It promotes bone growth and stimulates brain cells. It is also anti-tumor, antibacterial, and anti-insomnia, so that is good.
In terms of terpenes, you’ll be getting pinene (vaporizing point 155°C/311°F), it is a bronco dilator and an anti-inflammatory. Pinene is what gives your bud that pine wood forest smell.
Also, you’ll be evaporating beta-caryophyllene at 160°C/320°F, which is great because it is basically anti-everything; anti-sepsis, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-tumors, anti-inflammatory and on top of that it relieves anxiety. It will bring on a clove or black pepper like aroma.
Temperature Range – 185 to 200ºC/365-392°F
- CBN – 185°C/365°F
- CBD – 160 to 180°C/320-356°F
Working our way up the temperature scale your next foothold should be 185°C/365°F because at that temperature we get to release CBD (180ºC/356°F) and CBN (185°C/365°F).
CBD is what we all know as the cannabinoid linked to medical marijuana but actually, provides no buzz. CBN has sedation properties, is anti-emetic and an anti-convulsant.
Vapoing at this temperature will give you an extremely energetic and intense high. Curiously enough it is actually the terpene myrcene, being released at 168°C/334°F, responsible for this. It increases the amount of THC that can flow into your brain through the blood brain barrier. It’s also anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and anti-spasm. It has an aroma that will remind you of mangoes.
Another terpene that is given off at this temperature is limonene, at 176°C/349°F and as it suggests it has a citric aroma and helps against gastric influx. It stimulates the immune system and has anti-tumor properties.
Temperature Range – Around and over 200°C/392°F
- CBC – 220°C/428°F
- THCV – 220°C/428°F
- Linalool – 198°C/388°F
- Terpinol-4-ol – 209°C/408°F
- Borneol – 210°C/410°F
- Alpha-Terpinol – 217°C/423°F
- Pulegone – 224°C/435°F
The next and last notch on your scale should be around 220°C/428°F, at this temperature you’ll get that great relaxing, meditative high. Ever heard the expression “couch-lock”? This is the vaping temperature people suffering from chronic pain will appreciate.
The terpene Linalool evaporates at 198°C/388°F, it has a floral smell and is antipsychotic, anti-anxiety, anti-insomnia, anti-epileptic, and also a painkiller.
CBC is released at 220°C/428°F and this has antiviral, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory effects. CBC is also known to be great for anxiety and stress.
So there you have it, in a nutshell. Play around with the temperatures and see if you can spot the different terpene profiles with their different smells, and see if you can distinguish the different highs. Go for whatever medical benefits you are looking for. Then you can decide exactly how you like to vaporize.
AM I DONE VAPING?
Probably one of the most common problems for people starting vaping is not being sure if you’ve smoked your lot. The most straightforward answer we can give you is that marijuana starts to combust at 200ºC/392°F. You will see the weed start to turn from green to brown. If you want to avoid combustion completely, and all the side effects that come with it, keep your vaporizer below 200°C/392°F.
But as you may know, many of the cannabinoids available, and beneficial to us, are only achieved at a temperature higher than 200°C/392°F. Most of us will keep toking until there is nothing left, but for the puritans out there we suggest you slowly take the temperature up to the desired amount and only take a couple of small hits so as not to allow the whole bowl to reach and stay at that temperature and burn. You’ll still be able to get the beneficial cannabinoids you desire.
Tip: if you want to get the absolute most out of your weed, you can always use the leftover from vaping in food. Remember, you don’t even need to cook it, as it has already gone through the decarboxylation process. You can sprinkle it on salads or goats’ cheese for extra texture.
