Is it an urban rumour that some people really do not get high after smoking cannabis? No. There are people who don’t get high from smoking weed. In fact, besides not inhaling, there are several big reasons that people who smoke cannabis do not feel high.
However, this is in general not the average experience. So don’t panic.
Cannabinoids are the components of cannabis that literally “switch” on a response in the brain and body. Are there some people whose switches might be less susceptible to cannabis?
There is a subtext to this discussion. Sure, there are those who do not feel a sudden desire to eat chips and giggle incessantly.
However more and more people are using marijuana for medical reasons, but most medical users are also employees. How people act and react when using THC in a professional environment is now a hot topic of debate.
Cannabis affects everyone differently. Some people feel its euphoric effects more and faster than others, some strains are stronger than others and some people react different to edibles than to smoking.
And yes, there are some individuals who do in fact produce a hormone that essentially prevents them from feeling the psychoactive effects of cannabis.
YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY INHALE WEED
Let’s rule out the basics. You do actually have to ingest or inhale cannabinoids with THC in them. That is the only way to set yourself up for a “high.” Many newbie smokers do not inhale properly their first few times.
This can be because of unfamiliarity with smoking in general, or a matter of holding the hit, or maybe unfamiliarity with the new gadget they are faced with. Remember your first bong? Don’t laugh. It happens to everyone.
Try holding your hit a bit longer if you didn’t get as high as you like the first time. Coughing is not a sin and happens to most people. Some say it even helps you to get more high.
ARE YOU SURE THE WEED HAS THC?
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) are just 2 of the more than 163 different cannabinoids in cannabis, but are basically the main ones. THC is the psychoactive one that gets you high, and CBD is the cannabinoid that is loved for its medicinal qualities, but doesn’t get you high.
It may sound a bit daft, but it is always good to check wether the strain you are purchasing or smoking has any THC. If you are doing everything right and still are not getting high, you might be smoking a CBD strain that doesn’t contain any THC. Double check.
YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT FEELING HIGH FEELS LIKE
Newbie smokers probably have some kind of clue what being high feels like. But when it happens the first time, they might not realize they are high. That is why it is always a good idea to use cannabis with a friend the first couple of times. That way, you don’t do anything silly, and can get confirmation if you get confused.
Remember that everybody experiences things differently. So what you feel might be something different than what your friend feels. Also it is good to remember that everybody has a different tolerance level. Maybe you need a bit more than your friend, as he or she might be a bit more sensitive to weed than you.
REGULAR USERS MIGHT GET LESS HIGH OVER TIME
Some people who actually do not get high when they ingest cannabis are people who use marijuana frequently over large periods of time.
It can happen that you smoke a joint, or even two, and feel that you are not getting as high as you used to get from just a few drags.
This is because you build up your tolerance gradually. A good idea in this case might be to take a tolerance break.
Some people advice to just quite smoking for a while. Others say you should try smoking a different strain or using different gear to get high, or even just clean your bong. Just don’t panic, it happens to the best of us.
YOUNGER PEOPLE NEED MORE WEED
Metabolism has a lot to do with not only how high you get, but how quickly and for how long.
If you are younger, it might take more pot to get you high than grandma. So if you have tried to get high and it didn’t work, try a higher dose. It might also help to just do it again and again.
Some people claim they didn’t get high the first time they smoked, but they hit the jackpot second or third time around.
THERE IS A NATURAL CANNABINOID BLOCKER
Pregnenolone is a hormone that occurs naturally in the body. It can also be taken as a steroid. In fact, it is the inactive precursor to all steroid hormones.
However, the administration of THC increases the synthesis of this hormone in the brain, so it can also function as a natural block to protect the brain from CB1 receptor over activation.
For this reason, some researchers think this hormone can function as an antidote for those who take too much cannabis, or have become addicted to it.
However, in some individuals, this hormone might also be produced in much larger quantities than others. For that reason, yes it is absolutely possible to be less susceptible to pot. Or not be able to get high.
That does not mean, however, that such individuals cannot enjoy the medicinal benefits from cannabis.
