Don’t drink the bong water! This is of course nothing new as bong water is usually disgusting. But you should know that there are alternatives to your typical bong water. There are alternatives that make your smoking experience better. Some of them are so good you might reconsider drinking your bong water (don’t!).
The standard filter for bongs and waterpipes is room temperature tap water, which is said to filter some of the toxins found in cannabis smoke while simultaneously providing a smoother smoking experience.
However, cannabis forums are crawling with discussions over new alternatives to this age-old classic, with users claiming to replace the water in their bongs with everything from soda to milk.
So, just how do you decide which of these options is worth trying?
We can’t decide for you, but we can help as we’ve handpicked 10 of our favorite alternatives to traditional bong water. So, what are you waiting for? Get reading, pack a cone, and try these for yourself!
TOP ALTERNATIVES TO BONG WATER
1. ICE WATER
Users swear by ice water as an exceptional alternative to regular room temperature bong water, and we agree completely.
Next time you smoke, add plenty of ice cubes to your water for a completely different smoking experience.
The ice cubes help to cool the smoke while it is being filtered. It also makes for ultra smooth hits and also enhances some of the flavors of the cannabis, which is great for those users who are really into tasting their bud.
Tea is another popular alternative to regular bong water, and we agree that it adds a nice spin to the traditional bong smoking experience.
Similar to iced water, the heat of the tea seems to make for smoother, longer hits. While the flavors of the tea aren’t really noticeable when you take a hit, the aromatics from the tea are.
Plus, the heat from the water also warms your hands while smoking, which might be especially nice in winter time.
Simply boil some water, infuse it with some aromatic herbal tea (Lipton and Twinings red fruit blends work great), and add it to your bong.
Remember that poor-quality glass can shatter when you add hot water to it, so you’ll only want to do this with a bong you know can handle it.
Avoid adding hot water to acrylic bongs as you’re likely to inhale some plastic fumes along with your weed.
If you prefer smoking with cooled water, try infusing some tea and letting it cool to room temperature. Then add it to your bong with some ice cubes and you’ve got ice tea bong water. Yum!
3. INFUSED WATER
Many stoners swear by infusing their bong water with anything from mint leaves and citrus peels to essential oils, and we suggest you give it a shot.
Here are some popular ingredients used to infuse bong water:
– Mint leaves.
– Citrus peels (such as orange and lemon).
Whichever ingredient you choose, we suggest adding it to a jug of cold water and letting it infuse in the fridge for at least a few hours.
Alternatively you can also boil the ingredients in water for 5-10 minutes and then allowing it to cool completely. This helps the water absorb more flavors and aromas.
When you’re ready to smoke, add the water into your bong with some ice cubes. You can also smoke with hot infused water, although the experience is pretty similar to that of using tea.
4. FRUIT FLAVORED WATER
Adding fruit flavoring to your bong water definitely adds the most flavor to your smoking experience.
You can use any kind of fruit flavoring, such as Kool Aid or Sun Up. Whichever you prefer, simply add it to your water as per the packet instructions and add the water to your bong with some ice cubes.
Compared to the other bong water alternatives in this list, this is definitely the one that adds the most flavor to the smoke.
Note: Remember to clean your bong well after trying this. Most fruit flavorings contain a lot of sugar, which will leave your bong sticky if not cleaned properly.
5. CRANBERRY JUICE
This is another great option for those looking to add some subtle fruity notes to their bong smoking experience. While the flavors are definitely subtle, those with exceptional taste buds should be able to pick them up well enough.
You can add cranberry juice to your bong at room temperature or, just like with water, mix it with ice for a cooling effect.
According to most online sources, the acidity of cranberry juice helps to keep glassware clean for longer, which is great news for anyone who struggles to find the motivation to clean their bong regularly.
Using Gatorade instead of regular bong water is extremely popular. Similar to cranberry juice, the flavors from the Gatorade are super subtle, and generally end to come through while exhaling.
Remember that Gatorade contains quite a bit of sugar, so be sure to clean your bong after every use if you decide to use Gatorade as bong water.
Adding wine to your bong is a hot topic.
Most people are worried about inhaling alcohol fumes, and they have good reason to be. Inhaling fumes from strong alcohol (such as spirits) can be dangerous and extremely toxic
However, given wine’s low alcohol content, it poses a much smaller risk than, say, vodka.
If you want to try using wine instead of regular bong water, try using a sweet, medium-bodied red wine like a malbec. Alternatively, you may want to try a slightly sparkling Lambrusco, as the carbonation will change the texture of the smoke.
8. SNOW/CRUSHED ICE
This is probably one of the simplest bong water replacements out there. If it snows where you live, head outside, pick up a few big handfuls of clean white snow (not the yellow snow), and pack them into your bong for ultra smooth hits.
If it doesn’t snow where you live, you can use finely crushed ice instead.
You may struggle to through ice or snow due to its consistency. If this bothers you, we suggest adding just a tiny bit of water to the ice/snow or waiting a few minutes in order for it to melt. This will make it easier to draw smoke from the bowl and through the ice.
Note: You can also add some artificial fruit flavoring to your ice/snow for extra flavor and colour. Slurpees also work, although they’ll leave your bong ultra sticky.
If you want to add some real fruit flavors to your bong hits, this is worth trying.
Some popular juices to use as bong water alternatives include apple, orange, mango, and grapefruit. But be sure to experiment around and find your favourite.
Just remember that fruit juices contain a lot of natural sugar, so remember to clean your bong regularly to keep it from going sticky and deteriorating.
10. SPARKLING WATER
Out of all the bong water alternatives on this list, this is by far our favourite.
We suggest using flavored sparkling water (not to be confused with soda) such as those made by Nestle, San Pellegrino, or Schweppes. Some great flavors to try are lime, lemon, blood orange, pomelo, and raspberry.
Again, the flavor from the water is subtle at best, but it still adds nice undertones that really change your smoking experience. Best of all, the carbonation in the water completely alters the texture of the smoke, which seems to bubble and fizz in your mouth a little as you inhale.
For best results, we suggest adding plenty of ice to the sparkling water to cool down the smoke and get a truly unique experience.
